Group Volunteering
FAQ
What is your max/min group size?
-
Typical activities are planned for 10-15 volunteers
-
15 is the max number of volunteers we can accommodate for one activity due to space in our warehouse and the current needs we have, if you have more than 15, the group will need to be split into 2 or more groups depending on size. Some exceptions can be made depending on the activity. Email trisha@sharedharvest.org for questions about group size.
-
10 is the minimum required to reserve an event just for your party. If your party is less than 10, we ask that you coordinate one of our existing volunteer opportunity dates and have your party sign up individually. Please note groups of less than 10 may be combined with other groups or individuals to make a group up to 15. Email us with questions.
-
Do you have volunteer opportunities weekends or evenings?
Though we hope to add weekend and evening opportunities in the future, dates for volunteering onsite must be Monday-Friday between 9am-3pm due to operating hours and staff. We do have offsite drive-thru food distributions in Preble, Miami and Darke Counties that are Saturdays or evenings. Visit VolunteerHub for more information.
What to expect/What will we be doing?
See our FAQ on the main volunteer page for more information about everything you need to know before you show up for your first-time volunteering with Shared Harvest Foodbank.
How do we pick our date?
-
We have both individual volunteers and groups coming to help Shared Harvest Foodbank on a regular basis. Registration is set 1-2 months in advance on our volunteer site, VolunteerHub. The best place to start on picking a date is to visit our site and see if the time you would like is available. Due to staffing and inventory, we can only have one group per day. September-November is our busiest season for group volunteering so if your group is planning a day of service during this time, booking in advance is encouraged.
When looking at VolunteerHub:
-
Dates with "Group Reservation" are not available
-
Dates with "Sort & Pack onsite" or "Onsite Drive-thru distribution" are available; however, there may be other individual volunteers signed up for these dates already.
-
If none of the dates listed work for you, or you would like a different date/time, please let us know. We can often add dates for groups of 10 or more.
Example: For this event, 11 slots are remaining. So, if your group is 11 or less, we can reserve up to 11 slots for your group on this date.
We picked our date, what now?
-
Once you have a date established, email trisha@sharedharvest.org, she will create a custom landing page for your group to register for your volunteer event. From there, each volunteer will need to create a quick sign-up and sign our waivers before volunteering at Shared Harvest Foodbank.
-
VolunteerHub will send each registered volunteer a reminder before event.
Once we arrive, where do we go?
-
Try to arrange a carpool as parking is very limited; if the parking lot is full when you arrive, you may park in the grass (as shown below) but please do not block our loading docks.
-
Please make sure you wear close toed shoes, or you will not be permitted into the warehouse for safety reasons.
-
Do not bring purses, food or other personal items as these are not permitted in our warehouse for food safety reasons.
-
Come inside main entrance, there is a sign outside: Volunteer Entrance.
-
Please sign in for your event at the kiosk.
-
Our Volunteer Team will greet you and explain the activity planned for your group.
